Co-op Principles

Voluntary and Open Membership

City Harvest invites new members when we are able to do so, based on a willingness to accept the responsibilities of membership, without gender, social, racial, political or religious discrimination.

Democratic Member Control

The members are the co-op and all members have an equal say on decisions that affect the whole co-operative. We organize ourselves non-hierarchically, using consensus-based decision making.

Member Economic Participation

Members contribute equitably to, and democratically control, the capital of the co-operative.

Autonomy and Independence

City Harvest is an autonomous, self-run organization created by its members.

Mutual Aid and Solidarity

We intend to foster an atmosphere of mutual aid by supporting our fellow members in our work and respecting each others limits.

Education, Training and Information

We are aware that there is always more we can learn about farming, about living in harmony with the earth and with each other. As such, we are committed to making education and training a priority and will maintain an openness to learning and a willingness to share what we learn with others.

Cooperation among Cooperatives

We will find ways to work with other co-operatives to help build a co-operative society.

Concern for Community

City Harvest will work for the wellbeing of our local community and will recognize our relationship with the global community. We see our work as an opportunity to build community, increase food security and to create a more sustainable future. In our work, we will maintain open communication and respectful relationships with those whose backyards we farm on and others we directly do business with.

Concern for the Earth and Future Generations.

City Harvest members act as stewards of the land that we have under our care. We will give back more to the soil than we take and leave the soil cleaner than we found it. We intend to minimize our impact on the air, land and water in all aspects of our business, from purchasing to production to dealing with waste products.
